How to make a carton and case label

A 6" × 4" case label: company name and rule, a detail table that stays lined up, and both a barcode and a QR code.

6" × 4" roll 7 steps about 12 minutes

Steps

  1. Start a 6" × 4" label

    New label → Roll / thermal → 6x4.

  2. Company name across the top

Add a bold text line at around 23 pt, then add a Line under it at full width. A plain rule does more for a label's look than any amount of fussing.

  3. Put the detail in a table

Add a table, 3 rows by 2 columns, Col widths "1, 2" so the value column is twice as wide. Fill it with PART / LOT / QTY and their values.

  4. Shade the label column

Click each cell down the left column and press Grey background. It makes the block read like a form.

  5. Add a barcode along the bottom

Code 128 with the part and lot combined, as wide as the margins allow.

  6. Add a QR code beside the table

A QR code holds much more — a link to the packing list, or the whole lot record. Two ways to scan it, because you do not always know what the other end is carrying.

  7. Make the barcode bigger than feels necessary

Case labels get scanned from a conveyor or a forklift, not on a desk. A small barcode on a 203 dpi printer is the most common reason a scan fails.
