How to make asset tags for equipment and IT

A 2" × 1" asset tag: an ownership line, the asset number big with a matching barcode, and a whole office tagged from one spreadsheet.

2" × 1" roll 6 steps about 8 minutes

Steps

  1. Start a 2" × 1" label

    New label → Roll / thermal → 2x1.

  2. Add the ownership line

"Property of" and your company name, small and bold across the top. It does not need to be big — it needs to be there.

  3. Put the asset number in the middle, big

Centred and bold, with the same number as a barcode underneath so an audit is a walk around with a scanner.

  4. Leave auto-fit on for the number

Asset numbers grow digits as a company grows. You do not want the label that worked at a thousand items breaking at ten thousand.

  5. Tag everything at once

Put {Asset} in both the text and the barcode, then point the Print window at a spreadsheet with an Asset column. One label per row, numbered and barcoded.

  6. Put them in the same place every time

Same corner of every machine, so people know where to look.
