How to make file folder, binder and archive box labels

Avery sheets by product number, a folder tab that reads side-on, a binder spine turned 90°, and an archive box label that saves an argument in five years.

Avery 5160, a tall custom size, and 4" × 2" 5 steps about 10 minutes

Steps

  1. Start from the Avery number

New label → Avery sheets and type the number from the box — 5160 for address labels, thirty to a sheet. Do not measure anything; the layout comes from the catalogue.

  2. Folder tabs are one strong line

A folder tab is read side-on in a drawer. Put the name in bold, left-aligned, with a reference or a year underneath if you need it.

  3. Make a binder spine

New label → Custom with a tall narrow size, add the text, then press Turn 90° so it runs down the spine.

  4. Archive boxes want three things

On a 4" × 2" label: what is in it, the date range, and when it can be destroyed — all big enough to read from the top of a stack.

  5. Test the sheet before you print it

Copies means sheets rather than labels. Run one on plain paper and hold it up to the light against a real sheet.
